what is spiritual direction?
Spiritual Direction, also known as Spiritual Guidance or Spiritual Companioning, is a welcoming, respectful, gentle and non-judgmental process of sacred listening.

A Spiritual Director is NOT a counselor, a psychologist, a mentor or a moral advisor. They will also not supply answers. A Director is someone who has received special training to accompany others on their spiritual journey to discover Divine presence in all of life. Your Director will ask you questions and suggest spiritual practices to invite you into a deeper relationship with the Divine, help you sense invitations to spiritual growth, and develop a stronger understanding of your own humanity as a whole and sacred Self.

I am a certified spiritual director (Dominican Center, Grand Rapids), as well as an ordained pastor and a professional coach with specialty in the areas of leadership development, the Enneagram, emotional intelligence, and systems theory. My spiritual direction follows a contemplative listening approach, seeking to notice the presence of a loving God in all of life and to nurture the growth of our whole Self in the midst of life’s joys and challenges. When appropriate, I also like to incorporate art, music, poetry, nature therapy, and embodiment into spiritual direction practice.

Spiritual direction usually takes place regularly, about once a month, for 50-60 minutes. Some directees will choose to meet more regularly during a particularly intense season of life. And some will choose to meet less regularly when they desire a periodic check-in.

spiritual direction types, packages & fees
My fee for spiritual direction is a broad window: between $40-$100/hour for a basic session (non-Enneagram, non-group session). I let you choose what to pay based on what you can afford, and I trust your decision. I trust you to decide what’s fair. You may know that spiritual direction is considered to be a skilled service on a similar pay scale with services like massage therapy ($90 - $120 / hour). But direction is also intended to be accessible to all people, so directors will often offer reduced fees, sliding scales, pay-what-you-can, and even barter. I don't want money to be a deterrent, so if you can't afford a $40 base fee, we can negotiate. (Enneagram sessions are higher.)

- One-on-one, regular spiritual direction, for one hour. $40 - $100/hour (you choose the fee)
